Butler County, Pa.

A Pennsylvania couple shared a special moment this week at their favorite Chick-fil-A.

Fred and Betty Abdon celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in style at the fast-food chicken restaurant.

The Chick-fil-A Cranberry Township location treated the two longtime lovebirds to a special lunch, complete with a limousine escort from their senior center to the restaurant.

Almost every Saturday, the couple says they visit the restaurant, order their favorite menu items through the drive-thru, and enjoy their meal together in a nice quiet parking spot.

But this day, their sweet tradition got an upgrade. The happy couple was entertained by a singing quartet and received a complimentary meal, including Betty Abdon’s favorite – Chick-fil-A Chocolate Chunk Cookies.

Fred and Betty Abdon say one of the secrets to making their love last is setting time aside to keep dating.

Customers test positive for THC after eating ice cream from cafe, police say

Newmarket, N.H.

Authorities in New Hampshire are investigating how several people reported getting ill after eating ice cream at an area cafe.

According to the Newmarket Police Department, several patrons became sick last week after eating Angelo’s Amore ice cream at Roots Local Cafe and Catering.

Authorities said the ill-feeling customers checked themselves into hospitals after consuming the ice cream on March 17 and 18 with symptoms of severe dizziness, weakness and exceptionally high heart rates.

Police said some of the customers tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the compound responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects.

According to Newmarket police, one of the patrons was hospitalized overnight, while another was a juvenile.

Everyone has since recovered, police said.

Newmarket police said it is working with the Food and Drug Administration.

The Roots Local Cafe has been cooperative with the ongoing investigation and immediately forfeited the ice cream in question for testing, the department said.

Authorities in Florida say a deputy is on life support after recently suffering a serious brain injury.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Michael Milmerstadt developed a severe headache on Monday after a training session at the gym.

Authorities said Milmerstadt’s headache was later determined to be a serious brain injury.

“It is with deep sadness that we inform you Deputy Milmerstadt’s family has said goodbye to him. Mike remains on life support because it’s his wish and their wish that he provides a chance at life to others through organ donation,” the Orange County Sheriff’s Office shared.

The sheriff’s office said a GoFundMe has been created for Milmerstadt and his family.

State returns nearly $40K police took from man at airport

Following a legal battle, the $39,500 seized from small business owner Jerry Johnson has been returned. (Institute for Justice)

Charlotte, N.C.

A Charlotte trucking company owner has his money back after it was taken from him while at an airport in Arizona more than two years ago.

According to the Institute for Justice, a nonprofit public interest law firm, Jerry Johnson had $39,500 snatched from him by authorities at baggage claim when he was at the Phoenix airport in August 2020.

Johnson said he flew to Phoenix with the goal of purchasing a tractor-trailer for his trucking company with the cash. However, at baggage claim, he was questioned by police, and his money was seized and subjected to civil forfeiture.

An Arizona trial court ruled that he failed to prove the cash was his and, therefore, he could not contest the civil forfeiture of his money.

The Institute for Justice reports it took over Johnson’s case on appeal and in May 2022 the Arizona Court of Appeals held that the lower court’s ruling violated his right to due process. Johnson’s case was ultimately successfully appealed.

“Jerry’s case potently illustrates the injustice of civil forfeiture even when someone ultimately gets their property back,” said IJ Senior Attorney Dan Alban. “It took 31 months for Jerry to finally get his savings back while scraping together money to hire an attorney.”

Johnson said he is grateful to have his money back at the end of the day.

“It’s a blessing to finally have my savings back so that I can invest it in my business,” Johnson said. “That the government could take my money, never charge me with a crime but hold onto my savings for so long is outrageous.”

The state returned Johnson’s money after moving to dismiss the case, but it has reportedly not agreed to pay for his attorneys’ fees and interest.

The Institute for Justice said it has filed a motion for judgment on the pleadings and is continuing the fight for Johnson.

“We’re glad that the money has been returned, but Jerry still needs to be made whole,” Alban said.
